You may or may not know that the National Trust is a registered UK conservation charity, protecting historic places and outdoor spaces, for the benefit of our members and visitors. You can find out much more information on the principles of the National Trust by clicking here. Recently at Chartwell however, as regular readers of this blog will already be aware of, we have been doing some extra charity work of our own.
Back in October I brought up the subject of the male gardeners growing moustaches during the month of November. Once we’d got past how stupid we’d look and how annoyed our wives and girlfriends might be, we decided to give it a go. As well as being a bit of fun and a way of engaging in a spot of team bonding, the main reason was obviously to raise money and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer via the Movember Foundation. More information on the work that they do can be found on their website by clicking here.
We held a launch party on November 1st, which as you can see from the above picture was well stocked with ‘tache-shaped goodies and even some beer kindly donated by Westerham Brewery who we already have a close working relationship with that you can read about by clicking right here.
It soon became clear that it was not only the garden staff that wanted to do their bit for a good cause but also plenty of our volunteers too. Staff from the house, shop and office at Chartwell and even from other nearby National Trust properties such as Emmetts Gardens also got involved with a spot of nose neighbour growth of their own! Incidently, anyone wanting to bone up on the history of moustache growth should have a look at the wikipedia entry or simply pay a visit to the new Exhibition Room at Chartwell where a few of Sir Winston Churchill’s ancestors can be seen sporting some quality face brushes too!
By collecting from the staff and volunteers here at Chartwell in the various collection boxes around the site, and from our friends and families online via http://mobro.co/jamieharris1 I am very pleased to report we have managed to raise just over £800 for the Movember cancer cause! And as you can see from the pictures below, we had lots of fun doing so…
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made the effort to grow a moustache for a good cause, no matter how varied the results were! I’d also like to say a big thanks to everyone who contributed and donated to this marvellous cause. £800 is far more than I was expecting to raise when I first suggested the idea in that Monday morning team brief meeting back in October. How are we going to top it next year? Decembeard anyone?!…
